The holidays bring parties and get-togethers with friends and family. Your mother always told you to never show up to someone’s home empty handed. A bottle of wine or liquor is usually the standard go-to gift, but why not make your host feel special by bringing something thoughtful? Former PR pro and candy boutique owner Arlene Bordinhao has come up with some creative gift ideas for your hostess with the mostess.

A publicist and event planner for more than a decade, Arlene Bordinhao loves a fabulous event. Having created events for Giuseppe Zanotti and Donald J Pliner, Arlene decided that it was time to leave her corporate life and become a freelance publicist and event planner. To help with this endeavor, she opened B Sweet Candy Boutique, a candy store that carries the best candy from all over the world, plus fresh cotton candy all day long. She is also able to use her event planning expertise to create amazing candy buffets and sweets stations for weddings and any sweet event in between. Here are some of her suggestions for the best hostess gifts of the season.

A Little Mood Lighting

“Nothing relaxes the hostess like the sweet scent of a luxurious candle. Pick up a candle in her favorite scent (if you know it) or something special for the season. My favorites are the Voluspa candles in Huckleberry or Spruce Cuttings. If your hostess has small children or pets, stick with a tart, warmer scented flameless candle or reed diffuser.”

Conversation Pieces

“Coffee table books make great decor items and conversation pieces. Is your hostess a fashion phenom? Assouline has put together a three-volume series on the fashion, jewelry and perfume by Chanel. Another option is a book about Las Vegas or a book filled with majestic landscapes or art.”

Sweet Message Boards

“Nowadays everyone seems to be in hurry and rushing from place to place. Help your hostess keep track of her life with a decorative magnetic board from Petal Lane. The metal boards can be used to display pictures, notes and gentle reminders. The boards come in dozens of designs that include whimsy patterns, quotes and even the shapes of all 50 states. You can also customize a board with the hostess’ name or just DIY a cork board from the craft store.”

Dress Up The Table

“Tablecloths, linen napkins or guest towels are a great option for a hostess gift. Make life even easier for your host with paper tablecloth covers and runners by Layla Grayce. The disposable linens are super stylish and the hostess can just toss them after a meal. It’s a no-fuss way to decorate a table and not worry about wayward stains.”

Sweet Treats

“When all else fails, you can always show up with food. Holiday candy, homemade cookies or a bottle of wine are all great ideas. Almost every woman loves both chocolate and shoes, so why not bring her a chocolate shoe? Stop by B Sweet Candy Boutique and pick one up. I promise you’ll be on the guest list for every party.”
