(Las Vegas, NV) — The Clark County School District not only has to hire 2,000 teachers for the next school year, now it has to fill 95 more positions on top of that. The School Board approved the firing of close to 100 teachers and administrators who received unsatisfactory reviews, two years in a row.

Dr. Mike Barton is the CCSD’s Chief of the Student Achievement Office. He says this new legislation puts teachers on probation, and if they don’t improve, they can be let go. That’s why the number of staff being fired is so much higher than normal. On average, 22 teachers are let go each year.

Dr. Barton says they only want the best teachers in the classroom. Tenure in Nevada is three years, but with this new law, even tenured teachers can convert back to probationary status.
