Tale Of The Tape: Jason Kidd Trade Vs. Doc Rivers Trade

Coaching trades are rarities in major sports but two have happened rather close to each other in the NBA. Jason Kidd was just traded to the Milwaukee Bucks and in 2013 Doc Rivers was shipped to the Los Angeles Clippers. But which was the better trade overall?  Let’s go to the tape!

Track Record
After one season as a head coach, Jason Kidd had a 44-38 record and took the Brooklyn Nets into the playoffs. They lost in the second round to the Miami Heat.
Winner In 15 years of coaching, Doc Rivers has a 644-448 record with one NBA Championship and one Eastern Conference Championship under his belt. He also was awarded Coach of the Year honors in the 1999-2000 season.
Return
Winner The Nets ended up with two second round picks. One for 2015 and the other for 2019.
The Celtics received a 2015 first round pick from the Clippers.
Destination
The lowly Milwaukee Bucks are in a rebuilding stage and won't be good for a few years.
Winner Rivers joined the Clippers who had lost in the first round of the playoffs in the previous year. He became the coach of the star players Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. LOB CITY!
Reason For Trade
Kidd demanded more power in the Nets organization and they were not willing to grant it.
Winner The Celtics' Big Three magic was gone and they were ready to start rebuilding. Rivers was ready to leave and the Celtics saw an opportunity to get something out of it. Rivers left on good terms and with good memories.
Likability
Kidd is a Hollywood type coach. Bucks fans will like the showy type of coach that he is but his antics aren't so likable. Soda-Gate anyone? Larry Drew, ex-Bucks coach as of a couple days ago, definitely isn't a fan. Kidd is also rumored to have been the cause of several other coaches' firings in the past.
Winner Rivers was a respected coach then and is a respected coach now. He led the Clippers admirably through the Donald Sterling fiasco.

The Winner Is

Winner Doc Rivers
4 out of 5

The Doc Rivers trade is victorious in this bout. Jason Kidd had a successful first season but it's still too early to tell if he's going to be a great coach or not. The trade may not benefit either team. But the Doc Rivers trade was beneficial for both teams and he continues his reign as one of the great coaches in the NBA.
