LAS VEGAS (AP) — Democrat political newcomer Jacky Rosen is celebrating a close victory in her southern Nevada House race and turning her attention to setting up a district office where she’ll serve her Las Vegas-area constituents.

Rosen is a former software developer and synagogue leader who defeated Republican Danny Tarkanian by about 1 percentage point in the swing 3rd Congressional District. It’s been held for three terms by Republican Rep. Joe Heck, who made an unsuccessful bid for Senate instead of seeking re-election.

The race was the most expensive House contest in the country. Outside groups poured nearly $17 million toward the open seat.

Both sides agree that the aggressive Democratic ground game that helped turn Nevada blue up and down the ticket helped push Rosen over the top.
