Hearing Held in Ex-Nevada Prison Guard Shotgun Shooting Case

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A judge in Las Vegas is due to decide whether a former Nevada state prison guard trainee should be tried on criminal involuntary manslaughter and reckless disregard in the killing an inmate with shotgun blasts almost two years ago.

Raynaldo John Ruiz Ramos declined to comment Tuesday before his preliminary hearing in Las Vegas Justice Court.

His attorney, Joshua Tomsheck, said Ramos wouldn’t testify.

The case is one of several stemming from a prisons policy allowing the use of shotguns to control inmates.

The rule was changed this year following charges against Ramos.

He’s accused of killing Carlos Perez Jr. in November 2014 at High Desert State Prison in Indian Springs.

A federal civil rights lawsuit was filed in July on behalf of another former Nevada state prison inmate who says he was blinded by shotgun pellets fired by a guard in April 2015 at Ely State Prison.
