LAS VEGAS (AP) — Two federal firefighters killed in a crash after an apparent tire blow-out on a Nevada highway were roommates for the summer battle against wildfires in the West.

Jacob O’Malley’s father, Leonard O’Malley, said Tuesday that his son was a seven-year Bureau of Land Management firefighter and the captain of the three-member crew that crashed Sunday on State Highway 140 north of Winnemucca.

O’Malley was from Zephyr Cove on Lake Tahoe.

His roommate in Winnemucca, 22-year-old Will Hawkins, was from Reno, where his parents were making funeral arrangements and declined to talk with The Associated Press.

A third fire crew member, 23-year-old Zachery McElroy of Reno, was injured and is recovering at a hospital in Reno.

The BLM says the crash happened while the crew returned to Winnemucca from fire-spotting patrol.
