CARLSBAD, NM (CBS Las Vegas) – Police are looking for a suspect who they say set a man on fire while he was watering his lawn.
“It’s horrible,” Yolanda Martinez, the victim’s grandmother-in-law told KRQE. “You get chills just thinking anything like that can happen.
Police say a 42-year-old man was watering his lawn at home when two white men on bikes approached him.
“Two guys stop and yackity yack with him for a little while then all of a sudden they throw gas at him and the other throws a cigarette on him,” Johnny Martinez, the victim’s grandfather-in-law told the station.
The victim has been identified as Jimmy Gallegos.
“He’s in bad shape,” Johnny added. “All of his skin here was coming off the face, the hands.”
Johnny told police that Gallegos told him the two men stopped and asked for a drink of water; when Gallegos bend down to grab the hose for them they threw a flammable liquid and a lit cigarette on his body.
It is not known if this was a random attack or if the victim knew the men.
“It’s horrible just people that don’t care about anything or anyone,” Yolanda added.
Gallegos is currently at Lubbock hospital being treated for severe burns to his upper body and chest.
