(Elko, NV)  —  Inmates at a Nevada jail will soon have to foot the bill for their food, medical treatment and booking.

Sheriff Jim Pitts has asked the Elko County Commission for permission to charge prisoners $6.50 per meal, with a $10 fee for use of the jail’s doctor and $5 for a prescription.  Initial booking would cost $5.

The “Elko Daily Free Press” says it costs taxpayers $85 per day for each inmate.

Commissioners approved the plan uanimously, and are expected to finalize the fees at a future meeting.
