Goblin Toppling To Become Serious Crime

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A state legislator bothered by the deliberate toppling of a unique rock formation is proposing to make offenses like it punishable by prison and a heavy fine.

Rep. Dixon Pitcher says local authorities aren’t finding a charge serious enough to use in the case of a former Boy Scouts leader accused of pushing over a mushroom-shaped rock at Goblin Valley State Park.

The Ogden Republican says he’s drafting a measure to put the “fear of God” in anyone thinking about desecrating Utah’s natural geologic wonders.

Emery County Attorney David Blackwell says he’s struggling to find appropriate charges. He’s waiting for a report from state parks officials before taking action.
