ST. GEORGE, Utah (CBS Las Vegas) – A 6-year-old Utah boy is being called a hero after saving his friend from a pit bull attack, reports KUTV-TV.
Vincent Garrick and another 6-year-old Juan Argumedo were walking through a neighbors yard when the dog attacked.
Grandfather Kevin Barrick says he heard their screams and rushed to help.
He found Vincent holding the collar of the pit bull and Juan pinned underneath the animal.
“I could see Vincent standing there holding up on the dog’s collar, pulling, almost standing on his tippy toes, pulling as hard as he could,” Barrick told the station.
He also grabbed on to the collar and tried to lift the pit bull off of Juan.
“Juan was being pulled up with him,” he said. “He still had a hold of Juan’s face.”
After hitting the dog in the face, Kevin says the dog finally released the boy and Juan was able to escape, but not without horrible injuries.
“When they cut his shorts off from him and revealed his leg his mom about passed out and the paramedics say ‘oh, good Lord,'” Kevin added.
Juan’s father, Silvano Castillo, says his son underwent hours of surgery, but the wound to his leg exposed the bone and will require more procedures.
Both families say Vincent’s quick thinking saved Juan’s life.
The dog is under quarantine and no decision has yet been made on whether it will be euthanized.
