SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Five family members from West Jordan were taken to the hospital after troopers say a loose tire bounced over a six-foot-tall barrier and smashed into their minivan.

Utah Highway Patrol officials say the crash happened about 11 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 15 near Salt Lake City.

Officials say a pickup truck from Idaho had been hauling a fifth-wheel trailer that lost a tire on the freeway.

The tire jumped a concrete barrier and hit the van in the windshield and roof.

Two adults and three children were taken to the hospital.

The people pulling the trailer didn’t realize they had lost the tire, but a witness that saw it followed them until officers could stop them.

Troopers say the tire probably came off because the lug nuts weren’t properly tightened.
