LAS VEGAS (AP) — The booming cannon at the Flutter Fetti booth near the front of the gambling trade show in Las Vegas last week carpeted the floor with shimmering hearts and stars. The glittery mess outshone the slot machines and poker touchscreens in more ways than one.

A poll released by the national gambling lobby said that 26 percent of casino-goers now eschew wagering, and the city’s growing mega-clubs are threatening to become the most lucrative draw for a town built on betting.

The trade publication Nightclub & Bar says Sin City now boasts 7 of the country’s 10 most profitable nightclubs.

As clubs become increasingly important to casinos’ bottom line, programmers are competing to lure partiers with novelties they’d never see back home, including high-tech lasers, CO2 blasts and 3D screens.
