News Racks Clog Strip Traffic, County Says
Las Vegas CBS KXNT – The Clark County Commission will introduce an ordinance this week to eliminate the controversial newsracks that line the Strip, and feature adult publications.
The news racks are a public safety hazard because they impede pedestrian traffic, Commissioner Steve Sisolak told KXNT, citing a study from last year that recommended their removal.
The ACLU of Nevada has been an outspoken defender of the racks on First
Amendment grounds. Previous attempts to ban them as an inhibitor of a quality experience for tourists have been unsuccessful.
The county lost a legal challenge to a past ban because it was determined to free speech, said Tod Story of the ACLU.
The measure before the commission tomorrow has nothing to do with the materials inside the news racks, Sisolak said.
