PANGUITCH, Utah (AP) — A 9-year-old Utah girl has died in a freak accident after a strong gust of wind tossed a backyard trampoline more than 50 yards.

Garfield County sheriff’s officials say Oaklee Sidwell was playing with friends on the trampoline in Panguitch Tuesday afternoon. She was the last one sitting on the trampoline putting her shoes back on when the sudden wind gust lifted the trampoline off the ground and sent if flying.

The girl was taken to Garfield Memorial Hospital and later flown to Primary Children’s Hospital where she died on Wednesday.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Cheryl Church says the trampoline had been properly anchored to the ground and had a safety net.

She says it was a freak accident that turned into a tragedy and has affected the entire county.
