Nevada Projecting $529K Cost To Start New Pot Tax
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada tax officials are projecting $529,000 in startup costs before the state begins to recoup money from a new tax on the sale of medical marijuana.
The state Taxation Department has requested money from a special legislative fund to cover the cost of collecting the dispensary tax that Gov. Brian Sandoval signed into law earlier this year.
The measure goes into effect next year.
The state Board of Examiners is scheduled to consider the request Tuesday before it’s forwarded to the Legislature’s Interim Finance Committee.
Advocates say of the new system could raise up to $30 million a year.
Nevada voters approved medicinal pot more than a decade ago, but the only legal way to get it has been for cardholders to grow it themselves.
