LAS VEGAS (AP) — The federal government has pledged $6.6 million this year to help the homeless in Southern Nevada.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will provide local programs for homeless people with millions in Continuum of Care funding.

Organizers hoping to apply for the funds will be required to attend one of two meetings at the County Social Service Department on Aug. 12 or 13.

The $6.6 million is expected to fund more than 600 beds in transitional and permanent housing programs for the homeless.
