(NORTH LAS VEGAS, KXNT)–North Las Vegas police say a man arrested in Missouri is their suspect in the 1986 murder of a child.
A man named Jasper Goddard was apprehended following a routine traffic stop.
“An alert police officer in Ozark, Missouri doing his job stopped Mr. Goddard and discovered the warrant and arrested him at that time, says Tim Bedwell of the North Las Vegas Police Department.
He will be returned to this area to face charges in the murder of seven-year-old April Rhodes in November of 1986.
The little girl was found in a shed just a few doors from her family’s apartment near Lake Mead and Belton.
The girl had been sexually assaulted and bludgeoned. Police think she had been abducted from her bedroom.
Police indicate that DNA evidence saved at the original crime scene was used to make a match to Goddard last year, and he has been sought ever since.
“We had a situation where he went and gave a sample last year. Almost immediately we got a response and a hit between that sample and the sample that was taken from April’s murder,” says Bedwell.
Goddard is a registered sex offender, now 61 years old, who was a neighbor of April Rhodes at the time she was abducted.
