Las Vegas CBS KXNT- It might not draw crowds like the Big Dance or the Superbowl, but there is evidence that people will bet on U.S. elections. State Senator Tick Segerblom thinks allowing sports books to take bets on federal elections could be a boon to the Nevada economy. He’s inspired by the United Kingdom, where Americans were able to get odds and bet on last year’s U.S. presidential election.
If the Brits can cash in on American elections, Segerblom says, why shouldn’t Nevadans? He’s introducing a bill to make it legal, and says the industry is quietly enthusiastic.
“I’ve talked to the sports book companies in Nevada about the idea,” Segerblom told KXNT on Monday. “I don’t want to misquote them. No one has publicly come out and said ‘this is great'”
But why wouldn’t they love it? If it works out well, Segerblom says Nevada might even approach the Academy Awards and other big-name events.
