SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah judge is scheduled to hold an evidence hearing in the case of a man accused of beating to his 4-year-old stepson to death.
The hearing is set for 1 p.m. Monday in Farmington, Utah. Prosecutors say the 34-year-old Nathanael Sloop used a hammer to disfigure the boy’s face and buried the body in the mountains in May 2010.
Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty against Sloop.
Sloop’s wife, Stephanie Sloop, is also accused of contributing to the boy’s death or failing to stop it. Authorities say the boy was beaten, malnourished and left behind one day as the couple left to exchange wedding vows.
The boy died 10 days after his arrival to Utah from his birth father’s home in Virginia. He came to visit his mother as part of a custody agreement.
