Teen Falls 45 Feet Off New Mexico Ski Lift
SANTA FE, N.M. (CBS Las Vegas) — A frightening video has gone viral showing a 17-year-old boy falling 45 feet off a ski lift.
The unnamed teen survived the Feb. 2 fall at Ski Santa Fe, and reportedly suffered a fractured skull, lacerated liver and a collapsed lung, according to the video’s description which has since been removed.
“It was kind of a dramatic deal,” Cody Sheppard, ski patrol director at Ski Santa Fe, told the Santa Fe New Mexican. “I guess he was attempting to throw a snowball to the chair in front of him, where some friends were, and when he threw the snowball, the momentum just carried him out of the chair. He did hang on for awhile, but then he had to drop.”
The video, which was uploaded Feb. 18, shows the teen dangling for several seconds before falling 45 feet below into the snow. It has gotten over 330,000 views so far.
Sheppard says the teen is back home with his family and did not need surgery for his injuries.
“They kept him for observation for a couple of days, and then he was released,” Sheppard told the Santa Fe New Mexican. “I’d probably shatter. There is something about being young and flexible, I guess, and just lucky the way you land.”
