(Knoxville, TN) — Shipments of radioactive uranium from Tennessee’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory are heading to Nevada.
The “Knoxville News Sentinel” reports the Department of Energy could begin sending 403 canisters to the Nevada National Security Site outside Las Vegas early this year, where they will be buried underground.
It’s part of a half-billion-dollar program to dispose of material that has been housed at Oak Ridge for decades.
The DOE says it won’t provide further details until the shipments are completed.
