(Las Vegas CBS KXNT) – The University of Nevada at Las Vegas will graduate a class of 3,000 Tuesday at Cox Pavilion. It’s an 18 percent increase from winter of 2011, in the number of students eligible to participate in the commencement ceremony.
The school’s graduation tradition emphasizes student achievement. The ceremony will highlight two engineering students instead of presenting an invited commencement speaker.
One of the students to be honored is an undergraduate in mechanical engineering. The other is a doctoral candidate, also in mechanical engineering, with a focus on nuclear engineering.
UNLV’s school of engineering is bringing attention to the university and to Southern Nevada, according to spokesman Tony Allen. The school’s engineering, anthropology and nursing programs are gaining stature among similar institutions, and the Boyd School of Law at UNLV is in the nation’s top 100, he said.
