(Las Vegas, NV) — The Nevada Supreme Court has decided that a proposed Las Vegas-area property tax increase to benefit schools will be on the November ballot.

Six justices issued a terse ruling Thursday on a Nevada Policy Research Institute claim that the Regional Debt Management Commission violated state open meetings law by not taking public comment before approving the measure for the ballot.

The justices heard arguments Wednesday. They say a Clark County District Court judge didn’t abuse her discretion when she rejected an NPRI effort to block a public vote on the measure.

Officials say the tax would collect about $74 a year for each $100,000 of assessed home value in the Clark County School District.

District officials say the money would build and renovate schools and buy new equipment.
