NORTH OGDEN, Utah (AP) — North Ogden police say a corn vendor fabricated a story about being robbed because he was embarrassed he accidentally shot himself.
Authorities say the 30-year-old vendor reported the alleged crime on Saturday. He said he was at a roadside stand on North Washington Boulevard when a man approached him and demanded money, then shot him and fled.
The man gave police a description of the shooter, but police say the vendor’s story fell apart during a follow-up interview.
Authorities say the man accidentally discharged the gun and was struck in his lower back. Police say he was treated and released from the hospital.
Officials say he could be charged with discharging a firearm and making a false report to police.
A number listed for the man was disconnected.
