Las Vegas – University of Connecticut transfer Roscoe Smith will be forced to redshirt this year after the NCAA denied UNLV’s request for a legislative relief waiver. Smith will be eligible to start for the Rebels in the 2013-2014 season.

Smith, a 6-foot-8-inch, 205-pound forward from Baltimore, Md., was a sophomore during the 2011-12 season at Connecticut and transferred to UNLV this summer. As a freshman, he was a starter on the 2011 National Championship team.

“We are disappointed for Roscoe and our team, but we understand and accept the decision,” head coach Dave Rice said. “Roscoe brings tremendous experience from being a big part of a national championship team at UConn and he is now a highly valued member of our program. He will have a great career here at UNLV and has already become a terrific leader for us.”

In two years at UConn, Smith appeared in 74 games. As a sophomore he played in 33 contests, made 14 starts, and averaged 4.4 points and 3.4 rebounds in just over 18 minutes played per game. In Big East Conference play, he averaged 5.3 ppg and 3.2 rpg.
