Las Vegas – Redshirt freshman Nick Sherry will start at quarterback for the Rebels when they open the season against Minnesota on Aug. 30, head coach Bobby Hauck announced the decision Tuesday afternoon following his team’s preseason practice in Ely.
Sherry (6-5, 240) will become just the third freshman quarterback in UNLV history to start a season-opening game under center. Redshirt rookie Travis Dixon won his first assignment, 23-16, at Utah State in 2007 and redshirt Jon Denton was the first to do it when the Rebels fell 62-3 at No. 2-ranked Tennessee in the 1996 lid-lifter.
Sherry was battling two veteran returners for the starting job during spring practice and preseason camp. Junior Caleb Herring (6-3, 200), out of Moreno Valley, Calif. (Citrus Hill HS), started eight of his 10 games played in 2011 and led the team with 1,004 passing yards. Also in the mix was senior Sean Reilly (6-4, 210), a former transfer from Saddleback College who played in seven games a year ago, including two starts.
“It’s a great opportunity,” Sherry said. “To be named the starter — that’s an honor because they’re (Sean and Caleb) both really good. We’re all going to play during the year. So I’m going to go out there and work hard every day but I’m excited for next week’s game.”
UNLV will hold its second scrimmage Wednesday morning before packing up and returning to Las Vegas to prepare for the opener when the Gophers will become just the third Big Ten Conference team in history to play in Las Vegas.
