SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah High Patrol sergeant has helped a woman deliver fraternal twins in a remote section along Interstate 80 near the Nevada border.

Authorities say the father helped deliver the first baby shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday 24 miles from the border. Sgt. Cade Brenchley arrived minutes later and knelt beside the passenger seat to help deliver the second.

Police say the couple tied off the umbilical cord with a shoe lace between deliveries.

The mother was 36 weeks into the pregnancy when she went into labor.

Highway patrol reports the baby boy and girl were taken by air ambulance and the mother by ground ambulance to a Salt Lake City hospital. Officials say all were doing well when they left the highway, about 100 miles from the nearest hospital.
