SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A 29-year-old man has been arrested after West Valley City police say he jumped into a pond during a police chase before realizing he couldn’t swim.
Authorities say officers identified a stolen vehicle and tried to stop it about 3 a.m. Monday when the driver fled.
Officials say the suspect stopped the vehicle in Liberty Park in Salt Lake City and jumped head-first into a pond there.
West Valley City police Lt. Dale Brophy says the man started yelling that he couldn’t swim.
Brophy says the man wasn’t cooperative with police when they approached him, and a police K-9 bit the suspect several times.
The man has been booked into jail on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle, evading arrest, fleeing on foot and driving on a denied license.
