LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities have identified a 49-year-old woman who was fatally shot in Las Vegas after she pointed a gun at officers who were investigating a report of a stolen car.

The Clark County coroner says Sharmel T. Edwards of Las Vegas died of multiple gunshot wounds during the encounter about 1:40 a.m. Saturday near Jones Boulevard and Smoke Ranch Road.

Police say a man reported that a woman he knew stole his car, but the woman ignored officers’ commands after she was pulled over.

They say that after she pointed a gun at them, five officers fired handguns and struck her multiple times. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on routine paid administrative leave while the case is under investigation.
