The fate of over one thousand Clark County School District employees is in the hands of an outside source.
An arbitrator is set to rule, possibly by the end of the month, on the contracts of the teachers which could dramatically change the landscape of the district. Chief Financial Officer Jeff Weiler explained what the ruling might mean. ” The job loss would be a little over a thousand if we are unable to freeze salaries.”
The district’s $2 billion dollar budget that was approved Wednesday included salaries remaining steady. The Nevada State Education Association has been persistent about salary increase. If the arbitrator rules in favor then jobs will likely be lost.
“If the ruling goes in favor of the district, the damage will be considerably less. “That means we will be able to get by with minimal budget reductions…about $3 million dollars. In the light of how things have been recently, $3 million dollars is manageable.” CFO Jeff Weiler.
A more specific budget will come in May.
