LAS VEGAS (AP) — More than 100 members of the Nevada National Guard are spending New Year’s weekend in Las Vegas for a training exercise that will also add security for hundreds of thousands of tourists.
Sgt. Mike Getten says the troops have booked hotels and are completing drills alongside local law enforcement officers through Sunday.
Getten tells the Las Vegas Sun (http://bit.ly/u0CYaN ) the Guard is always ready for emergency situations, but says the drills are an annual exercise and aren’t coming in response to any specific threat.
Uniformed Guardsmen will be stationed at McCarran International Airport and at locations around the Las Vegas Strip. Helicopter crews also will be on standby.
Getten says the drills help troops gain experience securing areas and practice working with other law enforcement agencies.
