LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas police are pulling out a turkey costume for a pre-Thanksgiving crosswalk sting operation.

A costumed officer is set to be trolling crosswalks Tuesday morning at Maryland Parkway and Reno Avenue, south of Tropicana Avenue. Police will ticket motorists who don’t stop for the poultry-suited pedestrian.

Fines for failing to yield to pedestrians in Clark County start at $195 plus court fees.

Authorities say the sting is meant to raise driver awareness during the busy and often-stressful holiday season.

There have been 27 pedestrians killed in Clark County so far this year, including six in the past month.

Is that your nightstick or are you just happy to make an arrest?

This is friggin hilarious!! Maryland and Reno isn’t even a real busy intersection! It’s nowhere near the strip.

And yes….I’d be more worried about these Metro LVPD clowns shooting me, vs getting hit by a car. We have a bunch of boys with badges and guns who got their lunch money stolen from them in grade school. It’s scary!

Maryland and Reno is in the UNLV area. This is an extremely busy area with foot traffic. This is why the city is attacking the area. Local money to pay for the failing policies that the communist Democrats have brought to a once great area to live. Metro cares about one thing, money. This is not to promote awareness. Typical sting, and why I left the area I grew up in. Vegas is dead. Broke. And metro is the collection agency to pay for these failed policies.

Cops are usually the ones stealing the lunch money in grade school. They just get to do it with badges and guns as adults.

A person stands a greater chance of being shot by a Las Vegas police officer than of being run over in a crosswalk.

You mean more than 27 people were shot by police last year in Las Vegas or that more were shot than were run down in crosswalks? That’s how many people the article says were run down this year, though it doesn’t say those all occurred in crosswalks, but 27 police shootings in a year sounds pretty high to me.

I went to Vegas one time around twenty years ago and in 3 days time I saw two people gunned down by their peacekeepers. One at a McDonald’s and one at a gas station.

Sounds pretty high to a lot of people Major…but the fact is, as of early November of 2010, they had 24 officer involved shootings. I have that article from the Sun but I’d bet another one got killed before year’s end. The year before was 27. The year before that was 28. Yes my Friend, seems too high to many of us. And that doesn’t count the fact that LV Metro has the highest Tazer deaths in the country, regardless of population.
Yes, I’ll take my chance in a crosswalk.

November 23, 2011 at 4:43 am

The Rest of the Story

dmoore12, Deaths were not from Tazers. The majority of deaths are a result from illegal narcotics in their system, which were the primary factor in their death. The remainder were weakened by chronic alcohol and drug abuse. Las Vegas is Sin City. It attracts the worst of the worst. The odds of more police shootings (and criminal shootings) are a result of criminal slime attracted to LV money.

The classless city of degenerates that gives this country a bad name now thinks this extraction of your wealth is a good idea.

Here’s a better idea. Don’t go to Las Vegas ever again. You can gamble now in many other, much more civilized places and never have to deal with these miscreants ever again. F Las Vegas and tell everyone you know. Then send this to all in your address book.

I advise that pig to hang on to his turkey outfit. He’s going to need it to stay warm after police pensions are eliminated due to budget austerity measures.

NYC The center of the universe

Try that in NYC and haji the cab driver will be hosing you off the bumper. I cant believe that this is what the police of Las Vegas aren cracking down on…What a joke. In NY you aere taught look both ways THEN walk. In western states these inbiciles walk first then give you the finger when you beep as they are blocking traffic. IDIOTS… Sorry dummies you are no match for the bumper of my SUV!!!

Someone calling people “inbiciles” and dummies would do well to learn how to spell.

Or perhaps they don’t teach that in the center of the universe…

People in a cross walk have the legal right of way. Those who use their vehicle to intimidate people are denying them their rights and as a matter record more than 20 people their life because they are criminal sociopaths.

How many of those pedestrians who were struck by a car were ignoring traffic conditions and waltzing out into the street with an adult beverage in their hand? This can be seen all the time in both Las Vegas and Reno. In fact, I’ve watched at least one pedestrian dispose of his empty drink glass by propelling it onto the pavement, where it shattered into umpteen potential tire puncturers.

I have lived in Alaska and Nevada where state and local budget rely upon tourist dollars, and we have no state income tax. Yes. Tourist (and locals) get drunk, walk in front of traffic, etc. However, maybe we could be a bit more forgiving, as these people spent much money in economy and keep our taxes low. I do not excuse overzealous low enforcement and think sending turkey into traffic silly as it detracts from driver’s attention, but cut the tourist a little slack.

I am so glad that the crime rate in Las Vegas is so low and there is so little to do that the police can set up crosswalk sting. It is such important work….I am sure there were a lot less murders, armed robberies, assaults and rapes than the 27 people killed in crosswalks…..wait a minute…..The statement says pedestrians. Not necassarily pedestrians in cross walks. I am certain that the police make a lot more money for the city by busting those not yielding for pedestrians than they do investigating some money draining armed robbery case….I wonder if that law protects jaywalkers….If it makes the city money I am sure it does.

Great marketing Vegas! Brilliant. Funny thing, I haven’t’ been back to the Bay Area since getting a jaywalking ticket back in the 80s. Resentment runs deep.

Wow what a resentful soul you are, trust me I live in Vegas and I walk places cars here have no respect for pedestrians, even walking down the sidewalk I’ve had a lady yell at me because I walked through the crosswalk continuing in my direction of travel and did not stop in the middle of the road to clear the way for her as she made a left onto that street. After she cursed at me I told her to go back to the DMV and take a drivers test, you yield to pedestrians in crosswalks! If anything I think making the streets safer for ped’s which are more likely to be tourists and children is a good idea. If you don’t live here its hard for you to understand the car culture in Vegas people drive everywhere even if its only 100 yards from their home, also crosswalks and sidewalks are limited due to poor city planning combine the two and you have a very dangerous situation for pedestrians and cyclists.

Osceola County Florida pulled stunts like this years ago to catch speeders and red light runners on Rt 192 near the rodeo. It was hilarious. One scheme was a homeless man begging for money, but the sign detailed the red light enforcement. Another was a broke down truck in the median with some, “Good-ole boys” in the back with LIDAR. The worst was Kissimmee Police, they used a cherry picker in the median with an officer up in the basket forty feet up, with the LIDAR gun, and you did not have a chance!

If the officer in the turkey suit is run down by a motorist who failed to stop, is there a penalty for that motorist or is the turkey simply considered to be road kill?

So judging from the photo, the pilgrims are going to chase the turkey into traffic and they will arrest anyone who does no stop their car in time?

Capt America

Of the 27 people who got ran over in the street this year in Clark Co, how many of those people were to stupid, drunk, or strung out to realize that they should not walk out in traffic. I wonder how many of these people were illegal aliens who have no concept or respect for the laws. Natural selection at work, nothing more.
