Judge Blocks Plan For New NLV Election
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Nevada judge is blocking a July 19 vote the North Las Vegas City Council had scheduled to settle a contested ward race between a Republican challenger and a Democratic council incumbent.
Clark County District Court Judge Elizabeth Gonzales ruled Friday the council should certify the results of challenger Wade Wagner’s one-vote victory over Councilman Richard Cherchio before trying to resolve questions about whether an ineligible voter cast a ballot.
The council decided to redo the election in one precinct, letting all registered voters take part even if they didn’t cast ballots in the June 7 election.
Wagner’s lawyer accused the council of trying to manipulate the election outcome.
Cherchio tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal the ruling frees him to seek a recount and fight to keep his seat.
