Kidnapping Charges Dropped In Cole Puffinburger Case
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Kidnapping charges are being dropped in a federal trial stemming from the 2008 disappearance of a 6-year-old Las Vegas boy.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Wednesday that Luis Vega-Rubio agreed to plead guilty to interference with commerce and Jose Lopez-Buelna agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to distribute cocaine and money laundering.
Neither man now faces the possibility of life in federal prison.
Lopez Buelna faces at least 10 years, and Vega-Rubio faces a little more than five years in prison.
Cole Puffinburger was abducted in October 2008. He was found unharmed days later.
Defense attorneys have claimed the boy’s mother staged the kidnapping.
U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro ordered the boy brought to the courthouse Wednesday in case defense lawyers called him as a witness.
