Colorado head football coach Dan Hawkins was fired today and replaced by long-time Buffaloes assistant Brian Cabral on an interim basis. Hawkins was just 19-39 in his fifth season with the school, including 3-6 this year. Colorado finished a disappointing 3-9 last year, but athletic director Mike Bohn decided to bring Hawkins back and it looked like the decision might pay off, as the Buffs opened this season 3-1 with victories over Colorado State, Hawaii and Georgia. They have since lost five straight — all in Big 12 play. Cabral, a 1978 Colorado alum and a member of the Buffs’ Big Eight title team in 1976, is in his 22nd season at Colorado and 21st year as a full-time staff member.
