It almost seems an absurd question to ask — but it has been, anyway: Is Microsoft’s Kinect video game system racist?
Some people have been beefing about the system because it seems to have trouble picking out those with darker skin. The device, which was officially launched yesterday, uses a camera for facial recognition — and that allows players to control their games. After GameSpot claimed its testing found Kinect wanting when it came to picking up folks with darker skin, Consumer Reports looked into it. Turns out the problem isn’t racism — but lighting. The magazine says if the light in the room isn’t bright enough, the camera on Kinect can’t determine players’ facial features.
