The San Diego Chargers are set to part ways with Pro Bowl linebacker Shawne Merriman. The team has reportedly placed Merriman on injured reserve with a calf injury, and agreed to release him when he is recovered. After Merriman is released, he will be free to sign with any team as a free agent. The sixth-year player out of Maryland had 39 1/2 sacks and made three Pro Bowls in his first three seasons with the Chargers, but injuries have plagued him since the start of the 2008 season. Merriman has played in three of San Diego’s five games this season and made just six tackles.
