LAS VEGAS (AP) — County officials have withdrawn an offer to give an additional $1 million to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department unless the city makes a corresponding contribution.

The Clark County Commission said Tuesday it will provide the six-figure allocation, but only if Las Vegas contributed another $600,000. The total budget allocation would cover the cost of hiring one sergeant, two detectives and 10 officers as part of a team designed to combat violent crime.

The Las Vegas City Council last month approved $440,000 to cover that team’s overtime costs. City officials have said they won’t know if there’s enough money to continue the program until last fiscal year’s budget is audited.

Police department chief financial officer Rich Hoggan says he expects the funding discussion to resurface in the spring.
