Memorial Day means different things to Las Vegas guests and locals. It can stand for that first chance for a picnic or barbecue at the park, or maybe the challenge of participating in an organized baseball tournament or a pick-up game. This may be a quiet weekend to be spent with a furry friend and family at Sunset Park or reveling in the thrills of the newest attraction opening in the Las Vegas area. Whether you are looking for a day at Cowabunga Bay or a family camping trip to Lake Mead, you can have it all and then some in Las Vegas over Memorial Day weekend.

The hype is real. Cowabunga Bay waterslide park with the ’60s vibe opens for Memorial Day. Water-hungry Las Vegas and Henderson residents have been waiting for final news about this heavily publicized water park, and you can be sure it will be packed with hoards of families during this inaugural weekend. Daring guests can choose from the Zuma ZooMa, where visitors are placed in ‘capsules’ and blasted through a high-speed loop, while families with older kids may opt for the Beach Blanket Banzai, where rafts with seating for four take you on a twisty ride with a 600-foot drop. You may want to try the Wild Surf (with its rafts for four) where you can shoot the crest of a huge wave before hitting the pool below. Less daring riders may prefer Boardwalk Bay or the Lazy River. There are two pools with slides for the wee ones and surf and swim spots. This is sure to be a hit with area residents and guests to Las Vegas, so get in on the opening during this Memorial Day weekend. Free tubes and life jackets are provided. Cowabunga, dudes!

For many families, Memorial Day is the gateway to lazy, hazy summers. This often means celebrating with families and friends by going on a picnic or holding a barbecue. Sunset Park is the perfect place to spend a family Memorial Day. You’ll find green spaces for picnics and frisbee games, dog parks for your furry friend, a multitude of walking or cycling paths and barbecue pit areas to make that first meal of burgers or hot dogs to start the season off right. Whether you prefer a shaded spot or a place in the sun, you’ll find it at this huge natural space nestled smack dab in the middle of Henderson. Your kids will love the duck pond or they may even enjoy the fishing (adults need fishing licenses) or play structures. Big kids will enjoy the remote control boat launch area and interpretive trails, while everyone will want to cool off at the water play splash pad. Sunset Park has everything to make it your new Memorial Day tradition.
