Karaoke? For those of you familiar with the term, but unfamiliar with what it is, karaoke refers to the international entertainment phenomena of a person singing into a mic, with that voice being broadcast toward a small audience over a pre-taped original artists’ song — posing as your backup. With most karaoke venues touting thousands of original songs from every genre, you’re bound to find a tune you can carry off. So, should you have added the star-for-a-day notion to your bucket list, whether it’s belting out Whitney Houston’s “I’m Every Woman” or The Boss’ “Born In The USA,” now’s your chance to show the world your inner Mariah. After your initial debut and a few practice runs, you might be spewing out Top Tens like 50 Cent or P!nk. Songstresses and crooners beware — your talent might surprise you when you find men throwing their phone numbers, women throwing brassieres, or a card-waving agent in the crowd. Start practicing your autograph. – Marco Medrano

Ellis Island Casino & Brewery is a well-known favorite for many Las Vegans seeking 24-hour dining and reliable daily specials, where prime rib is famously affordable here. To many, Ellis Island resembles and old-fashioned Joe’s with a side of gaming and a dash of kitsch — and one of the most popular karaoke venues in the city. Voted more than once as “best of” in Las Vegas, karaoke at Ellis Island is just dark enough and off the beaten path that, should anyone recognize you, it’s only because they’re waiting to rip the mic out of your hand. Karaoke hours: 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., daily.

Well, the name says it all — and they’re serious. Die-hard karaoke stars wouldn’t think of missing a beat at the Karaoke Club. Perhaps they did and nobody told them? Regardless, this is an entire lounge devoted to karaoke. After a brief lull, the Karaoke Club is back by popular demand and packing ‘em in. Karaoke Club is a great place to immortalize your performance on DVD or just plain cocktailing spectator sport. Fun, fun, fun and free. Call ahead for changes due to arena sports broadcasts. Closing times depend on audience. Hours: Sunday through Thursday, from 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, from 10 p.m.

Dino’s Lounge (downtown)

1516 Las Vegas Boulevard South
Las Vegas, NV 89104
(702) 382-3894

After being in business for more than four decades, Dino’s knows a thing or two. Home to the “Five Beers For $12″ promo, Dino’s Lounge has been leading the pack with karaoke for some time. Liquid courage, anyone? Here, the audience is considered family at Dino’s, and not only do they know karaoke, they hail karaoke as a live Vegas act — sans the sequins. This could very well be the Broadway-meets-working-man version of the sitcom “Friends.” Hours: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10 p.m. until Dino say’s “closed.”
