Kids love to have fun playing and taking part in physical activities and sports. While Las Vegas is often marketed as an adult playground, the city is overflowing with an abundance of activities appropriate for children of all ages. Be it Zumba, martial arts, sports, hiking or gyms specially designed with children in mind, there’s no excuse for any child to be a couch potato in Vegas. It’s time to take action and engage children in their choice of extracurricular entertainment that does more than exercise their controller finger and thumb.

Martial Arts
Whitney Ranch Recreational Center
1575 Galleria Drive
Henderson, NV 89014

Martial arts is far more than simply learning to fight and is not intended as a weapon toward any other person. Tae Kwon Do improves reflexes, coordination, strength and stamina while emphasizing kicking techniques. This is a discipline of mind and body where students strive to achieve courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and spirit. As you advance, additional costs may apply. Introductory karate teaches Chun Kuk Do, founded by martial arts expert Chuck Norris, which embodies the values of discipline, loyalty and respect. Li’l Dragons (aged three to under four) is a child’s first experience with this form of martial arts. Students learn self-defense, coordination, how to follow instructions and enhance their listening skills. These programs are offered at a number of Recreation Centers in Henderson and Las Vegas.

Walking or Hiking
The Pittman Wash

Henderson, NV
4+-Mile Trail

Not all children enjoy engaging in planned fitness classes or routines, but most enjoy getting to explore with nature. The Pittman Wash in Henderson offers trails throughout much of Henderson, bordering Las Vegas. In one special portion between Green Valley Parkway and Valley Verde Drive, the City has left the wash undisturbed in its natural condition. There has been talk of putting in concrete barriers to alleviate erosion, but so far it’s still pristine. Nature trails run along the floor of the wash, winding through Mojave desert brush and trees. You can cycle, walk, hike, run or take the dog for an outing while benefiting from the natural desert environment and shaded pathways which offer the occasional bench or picnic tables for you to enjoy lunch or a snack. Just remember to be mindful of the wildlife (including quail, song birds, lizards, and occasional snakes, coyotes or wild dogs in the evenings) and keep your dog on a leash and the kids nearby.
