Foodies and exercise aficionados can find common ground in the growing restaurant trend of ‘health bars,’ where lean and sinless cuisine has recreated itself with sexy panache. The recipes for healthy alternatives to otherwise indulgent meals are seemingly endless. Certain body-conscious meals may demand more time, a commodity that busybodies may not have to make a perfect black bean burger or vegan chickpea meatloaf. For those looking for the perfect pre- or post-workout meal that’s just as easy to make at home, think no further than the classic smoothie. Our resident expert has come out with some recipes that aren’t exactly “classic,” but most of the following ingredient lists are available at your average grocery store. The key is a good blender.

Kovatch has worked with ‘raw mixologist’ Shane Stuart to perfect the art of exotic and extremely healthy smoothies and juices. His recipes maximize superfood nutrients for boosting and replenishing energy, and sell by the thousands to the fitness crowd. G&P also features a fine selection of exotic healthy entrees, from bison burgers to vegan pizzas. Its landmark smoothies, however, can be crafted by anyone with a blender. While G&P guards its proportions, the beauty of smoothie making is that recipes change according to the user. Read on for some of the best healthy recommendations from Jeff Kovatch.
