The best thing about shopping for back to school is picking out new clothes. Who better to provide tips for college fashion essentials than an actual college student? Lauren Feather runs Best Kept Secret Boutique in between shuttling herself back and forth to UNLV. She conceptualized Best Kept Secret during her first year of college when she found it difficult to find fashion for her busy lifestyle. Best Kept Secret has thrived on providing young women with adorable and affordable options under $50 and now has a pop-up shop inside The Market at Tivoli Village. Lauren is busy stocking up for fall and has these tips for college students doing their back-to-school shopping.
Tip 1: Incorporate Denim
Denim will be popular this fall. Not only is denim comfortable, it is also very versatile. Pair dark denim jeans with a light-colored denim shirt or jean jacket. The trend of neon-colored denim will also transcend over to fall, so choose some orange or purple jeans to change up your jeans wardrobe. Denim also serves another purpose for college students, keeping you warm in cold classrooms.
Tip 2: Wear Patterns
Patterns of all types are big this season. Polka dots, chevron stripes and floral patterns will be all over dresses, tops and skirts. A bold chevron-printed dresses will have all eyes on you for that big presentation. Play it cool in the student union with a floral skirt and solid top or put a polka dot blouse under a boyfriend blazer. There is also some good news for your leopard pieces from last season, they are still good to go for fall.
Tip 3: Be Casual And Comfy
Are you one of those students who spends all day on campus? Why not be comfortable? Basic tees and yoga pants aren’t just for the gym. Be prepared to hit the library or the gym with a collection comfy tees and workout pants in different colors. Pair boyfriend jeans with a cute graphic tee and add a zip-up sweatshirt around your waist in case the weather turns cold.
Tip 4: Use Accessories To Dress Up Or Down
Too busy to change after class? A plain, casual dress can be dressed up for a night out with some simple accessories. Add a chunky necklace, decorative belt or scarf. Wear flats for walking around campus and keep a pair of nude heels in the car to wear out at night. Get rid of that boring backpack. Pick up a cute patterned messenger bag, a mini backpack or a rugged leather carryall.
Tip 5: Stock up on Sweaters
Sweaters of all types are a must for your fall wardrobe. Look for rustic, oversized sweaters and cute colored cardigans. Sweaters will keep you warm when fall temperatures drop and there is nothing like a snazzy sweater to jazz up a boring outfit. For a bold look, select a pullover sweater in emerald green, the Pantone Color of the Year for 2013.
