Setbacks For Firm Converting Plant To Horse Slaughterhouse

A New Mexico company’s hard-fought attempt to convert its cattle plant to a horse slaughterhouse was dealt a series of new blows Monday, with the state denying its wastewater permit and actor Robert Redford, former Gov. Bill Richardson and the state attorney general announcing plans to intervene in a lawsuit seeking to block a return to domestic horse slaughter.

Federal officials have granted a southeastern New Mexico company’s request to open a horse slaughterhouse, adding Friday that they plan to grant similar permits to operations in Iowa and Missouri.

An employee of a southeastern New Mexico slaughterhouse that is seeking federal approval to slaughter horses has posted a video online showing him fatally shooting a horse in the head, sparking outrage among animal activists and prompting death threats to the Roswell meat company.
