Federal Appeals Court Halts Horse Slaughter

A federal appeals court on Monday temporarily halted plans by companies in New Mexico and Missouri to begin slaughtering horses, continuing on-again, off-again efforts to resume domestic equine slaughter two years after Congress lifted a ban on the practice.

Fed Officials Approve Horse Slaughterhouse To Process Animals Into Meat

Federal officials have granted a southeastern New Mexico company’s request to open a horse slaughterhouse, adding Friday that they plan to grant similar permits to operations in Iowa and Missouri.

Vilsack: New Mexico Horse Slaughter Plant Will Open Soon

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says the southern New Mexico plant that has been fighting for more than a year for permission to slaughter horses will open soon, unless Congress reinstates a ban on the practice.
