Las Vegas – The 20th ranked Runnin’ Rebels picked up their 24th win of the season 15th at the Thomas and Mack Saturday afternoon in front of over sixteen thousand fans. UNLV dominated the Falcons for most of the game leading by as many as 17 in the 2nd half but Air Force put up a fight and pulled within 10 only to lose 68-58. The Rebels were led by Senior Guard Chace Stanback who had 21 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals, Anthony Marshall added 15 points and 5 assists in the Rebels Win. UNLV is now 24-6 overall and 8-4 in the Mountain West as they head to Colorado Springs to take on the Rams Wednesday night.

Celine Dion Cancels Vegas Shows Due To Virus

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Singer Celine Dion has canceled several upcoming concerts in Las Vegas because of a virus.

Caesars Palace officials say her doctor advised her to rest for a week to recover from the virus, which caused an inflammation of her vocal cords. Shows scheduled for Friday, Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday were canceled at the resort’s Colosseum.

Her next scheduled concert there is March 3.

Dion, in a statement, said she doesn’t “like to let people down,” and she feels terrible about not being able to perform at the shows. Refunds will be given to people who bought tickets.

Caesars spent $95 million to build the Colosseum for Dion in 2003, complete with a humidifier to protect her voice.

Death Of Inmate In Las Vegas Jail Ruled Natural

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities say the January death of an ex-convict in custody at the Clark County jail was from natural causes.

The Clark County coroner’s office said Friday that 51-year-old Ona Sean Grimes died of emphysema, and an autopsy also found arterial disease and evidence of alcohol abuse.

Police say Grimes died about 12:05 a.m. Jan. 14 at the jail from what appeared to have been a medical episode.

The coroner reported nothing immediately suspicious about the death.

Records showed that Grimes had previous drug conspiracy, stolen property and theft convictions.

Amber Alert Cancelled

The disappearance of three Idaho children reportedly taken last week by their non custodial mother near Caldwell, led to an Amber Alert in several western states, including Nevada . You may have seen the messages on the freeway signs around the las vegas valley. Now comes word from caldwell that the Alert is being cancelled, even though the kids and the non-custodial mom are still missing. A news release says investigators, including the FBI are pretty sure the kids and the adult went to Mexico. The investigation continues.

Las Vegas Schools Adopt New Ranking System

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas-area school administrators are promising more transparency and flexibility through a new school ranking system while the state prepares to withdraw from the federal No Child Left Behind program.

Clark County School Superintendent Dwight Jones says the nation’s fifth-largest school district is putting its more than 300 elementary and middle schools on a district-wide scale from low — one star — to high — five stars.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/zo4owi ) that 37 elementary schools earned five stars.

They’ll get more autonomy in curriculum, budget and operational decisions.

Sixty-four elementary schools earned one or two stars.

That puts them below minimum standards and means they’ll get more attention and resources.

Officials say the framework will be extended to high schools in coming weeks.

Ex-Inmates Settle Case

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Four former Clark County jail inmates will share a $23,000 federal civil lawsuit settlement stemming from guards tossing lighted firecrackers into a prisoner area at the jail nearly nine years ago.

Nevada state prison inmates Michael Krivak and Erik Watson, paroled inmate Stephen Basden and California inmate Alex Owen will share the $8,000 payment from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and $7,500 each from corrections officers Alan Hirjak and Christopher Brinkley.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/AavboQ ) that attorney Cal Potter III cooperated with the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada in filing the civil rights lawsuit.

U.S. District Judge James Mahan dismissed the case in 2006, but the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed his decision in 2008.

Hirjak and Brinkley were disciplined but kept their jobs.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — About the same number of passengers used McCarran International Airport in January 2012 as the same month a year ago.

Data released Friday by the Clark County Department of Aviation showed about 3.2 million arriving and departing passengers at the Las Vegas airport last month. That’s up 10,500, or three-tenths of a percent, compared with January 2011.

The monthly report comes after officials reported the airport handled almost 41.5 million passengers in 2011, up 4.3 percent from 2010.

The airport’s four busiest airlines — Southwest, Delta, American and US Airways — handled fewer passengers in January than last year. Only Allegiant reported an increase.

McCarran ranks as the eighth-busiest U.S. airport. It is preparing to open a $2.4 billion terminal in June to boost capacity to about 53 million passengers.

Have You Tried The ‘Healthy’ Button?

BOSTON (CBS) – Boston-based RunKeeper took another step toward establishing itself as a global platform for fitness and wellness data this week with its new “healthy” button which will work much like Facebook’s “like” button.

PowerBar and Stonyfield Farm are among about a half dozen companies who’ve signed up to get the healthy button on their websites.

If a website visitor clicks on the healthy button, it broadcasts their approval of a product or a service to their friends on Runkeeper’s site.

RunKeeper had been testing out the button on its own site.

RunKeeper first started off as an iPhone app for runners but is planning to become a global fitness platform.
