More severe weather expected today; people urged to get ready now.

WASHINGTON, Monday, May 20, 2013 — The American Red Cross is helping people in the Midwest with shelter, food, relief supplies and emotional comfort after tornadoes over the weekend destroyed homes and left thousands without power.

As many as 26 tornadoes were reported in Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois and Iowa, according to the National Weather Service. Hardest hit is Oklahoma, where severe tornadoes ripped through several counties, destroying or damaging hundreds of homes and leaving as many as 35,000 in the dark. The Governor declared a state of emergency in 16 counties. The Red Cross is supporting first responders and is providing shelter, food, distributing relief items and clean-up supplies and working with local and state officials to ensure people get the help they need.

The Red Cross is also helping in Kansas, Iowa and Missouri, where storms left more than 71,000 people without power. Meanwhile, the response continues following last week’s tornadoes in Texas, where the Red Cross is still operating shelters and providing food, relief items as well as health and mental health services.

Las Vegas CBS KXNT – It’s a new hotel in a building that’s practically new, says Fifth Street Gaming CEO Seth Schorr.

“We took over the project two years ago, and have basically taken down this tower to studs and concrete,” Schorr said of renovating the old Lady Luck. “It’s as new as a hotel can be without completely demoing it… new electric, new plumbing, new bathrooms, all new guest rooms.”

And new employees. Schorr says the company is recruiting for every position from general manager on down.

“Servers, housekeepers, dealers, valet, you name it,” he said. The recruiting is underway now, but most of the employees will start about three weeks before the grand opening, which is set for some time this fall.

Schorr says working at the 650-room property will be a different experience than working for one of the local mega-properties, where there are thousands of employees.

“When you come work for a company like Fifth Street Gaming at the Downtown Grand, everybody’s important, and we really mean that,” he said. “And it’s easier to mean that and say that when you’re a smaller company.”

(Las Vegas, NV) — The Nevada Senate has overwhelming approved a bill authorizing driving privilege cards for non-U.S. residents.

Monday’s vote was 20-1. SB303 now goes to the Assembly where passage is expected. Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval also backs the proposal.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Mo Denis of Las Vegas says the bill will make Nevada roads safer because it will allow people in the country illegally to take a driving test, obtain a card and obtain insurance.

Driving privilege cards could not be used as official identification and they would have to be renewed annually.

Four states — Utah, New Mexico, Illinois and Washington — currently have similar driving cards.

BOSTON (CBSNewYork/AP) — The Bruins know a huge deficit can disappear quickly. They overcame one to reach the second round of the playoffs.

So they weren’t about to ease up when they had a big lead of their own on Sunday.

Boston went ahead by two goals in the first minute of the third period, added another 12 minutes later and beat the New York Rangers 5-2 to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals.

Still, the Blueshirts aren’t about to go down without a fight as the series heads to New York.

“We don’t want to lose two games here, no one does,” said Rangers coach John Tortorella. “But there’s no give in this team. There will be no give in this team. We need to go win a game. Not look anywhere else, just try to win our first home game this series.”

Just six days earlier, the Bruins became the first team to win a Game 7 after trailing by three goals in the third period. They started their comeback with less than 11 minutes left and extended their season with a 5-4 overtime win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

“Guys are really trying to stay focused on doing their job in the third period,” Brad Marchand said. “We know how important they are, especially after what we went through being down by a few goals. We know that it’s possible for any team to come back from any score.”

Marchand made it 4-2 with just 26 seconds gone in the third period, Milan Lucic scored at 12:39 and the Bruins worked hard the rest of the way.

“We talked about it before we went out there in the third period, and we just had to make sure that we played to win,” Boston coach Claude Julien said. “I don’t like our team when we play on our heels and we’re just trying to protect a one-goal lead. We’ve got to extend the lead and extend it even more before we even think about protecting it.”

Game 3 is Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.

The Rangers never led Sunday, although they tied the game quickly after each of the Bruins’ first two goals.

The second period may have been New York’s best of the series even though Johnny Boychuk’s tie-breaking goal on a 40-foot shot at 12:08 of the period got past goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who was screened by several players.

“We played a really good second,” New York’s Dan Girardi said. “The first shift of the third killed us.”

That’s when Marchand made it 4-2 with a goal similar to the one that gave the Bruins a 3-2 overtime win in the opener.

Patrice Bergeron carried the puck in deep along the right side and passed across the crease to Marchand, who had beaten Girardi and tipped it in.

“I have to be ready to defend that pass there,” Girardi said. “They didn’t have much room, but, obviously, I have to be either on the strong side blocking that or on Marchand’s stick. That really put us behind the eight-ball.”

With a two-goal lead, the Bruins remained aggressive but still clogged the middle in front of goalie Tuukka Rask when the Rangers attacked.

“We felt really good going into the third, and to have that type of goal go in — it’s just two-on-two — it hurts you,” Tortorella said. “We couldn’t generate anything, and then they’re just going to fill the middle and they’re just going to jam you.”

Boston never trailed as rookie Torey Krug scored the first goal at 5:28 of the first period before Rangers captain Ryan Callahan tied it less than three minutes later. Gregory Campbell made it 2-1 at 2:24 of the second period, and New York pulled even again 56 seconds later on Rick Nash’s goal, his first of the playoffs after he led the Rangers with 21 in the regular season.

“We didn’t play our best,” Marchand said. “I think, especially in the second period, they took it to us, but we were able to bounce back. It’s definitely a very even series.”

Not when it comes to goaltending.

Lundqvist allowed more than five goals for the first time in 152 games, including the postseason, and stopped 27 shots.

“I thought I was in position, but (there were) a couple screens and when you give up five goals you can’t be satisfied,” he said.

There’s also the matter of his left shoulder that was hit by Daniel Paille’s third-period shot. Lundqvist rubbed it after the game and said, “We’ll take a look at it.”

Rask saved 35 of 37 shots.

Still, Lundqvist won the Vezina Trophy last year and is a finalist for it this year.

“I know that I can’t let in any lead goals most nights because he is who he is,” Rask said, “but, then again it’s a team game and we’re more focused on the Rangers than any individual.”

These are the Rangers who also lost the first two games of their opening series on the road, then won the next two at home. They lost Game 5 in Washington but won the last two games behind shutouts by Lundqvist.

“We’ve done it before,” he said, “but I think we are playing a better team now so it’s going to be tough to do it.”

Ahead or behind, home or away, the Bruins plan to play with the same determination the entire game.

“You can’t take anything for granted,” Boychuk said. “It’s playoffs. Anything can happen, and sometimes a team can play better in front of their hometown.”

NOTES: The last time Lundqvist allowed more than four goals was March 9, 2011, in a 5-2 loss to Anaheim. In the next 151 games he allowed four goals just 13 times. … The Bruins played their second straight game without injured veteran defensemen Andrew Ference, Dennis Seidenberg and Wade Redden … A defenseman got a goal or an assist on each of Boston’s goals. … The margin of victory was more than two for just the second time in 26 games between the teams. … In their nine playoff games, the Rangers have scored on two of 35 power plays. They’re 0 for 7 against the Bruins.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — With two days off in an all-California series, the Los Angeles Kings seized the opportunity to fly home for two days of practice before Game 4.

After their performance in Game 3, it is clear the defending Stanley Cup champions still need plenty of work.

The Kings went through a short workout at their training complex Sunday after sleeping in their own beds following a 2-1 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night.

Such easy travel usually isn’t possible in the spread-out Western Conference, but Game 4 isn’t until Tuesday night at the Shark Tank.

“We were home at pretty much the same time as we would coming from Staples on a regular night,” center Anze Kopitar said. “It’s a 50-minute flight, so it’s pretty quick. I think it’s good for us.”

Los Angeles’ 2-1 loss in Game 3 ended on a power-play goal after two penalty calls that angered and confused the Kings for several reasons. Yet captain Dustin Brown acknowledged the Kings have plenty of concerns beyond the officiating.

Los Angeles leads the series 2-1, but only after getting a 35-save shutout from Jonathan Quick in Game 1 and stealing Game 2 with two late power-play goals.

“We’ve got to score more than one goal,” Brown said. “I mean, Quickie is a great goalie, but at the end of the day, we need to score more than one goal for him. We haven’t done that. I think we’ve only scored one goal three times out of four away games.”

Indeed, the Kings have scored six goals in their four road playoff games this spring, half of them in a 3-2 overtime win at St. Louis. The other three road playoff games all have been 2-1 losses — and before that, Los Angeles dropped six straight road games to close the regular season, scoring nine goals in that stretch.

Robyn Regehr was whistled for hooking on a seemingly garden-variety stick play with 41.7 seconds left in regulation in Game 3, and Trevor Lewis followed him into the box with 4.5 seconds left on a goaltender interference call that had the Kings steaming. They claimed Lewis was pushed into Antti Niemi, and questioned why such a dramatic call would be made so late in a game.

The Kings killed off the 5-on-3 disadvantage, but gave up Logan Couture’s power-play game-winner. Quick, who shut out the Sharks from the opening minutes until the final buzzer, got a game misconduct for berating the officials who made the decisive call.

“Not happy, but we can’t do anything about it,” Kopitar said. “Again, it’s the position that we put ourselves into that is mind-boggling. It’s not the way we want to play and be in that situation. We came close to killing it off, but we’ve said it all along, you can’t give them too many opportunities, because they will score, and they did.”

The Kings have demonstrated they know how to regroup after a playoff loss. After dropping the first two games of the postseason in St. Louis, they responded with six straight victories.

The Sharks also present a challenge similar to the Blues in their desire to attack Quick with a high volume of shots. St. Louis outshot Los Angeles in four of the six games, and the Kings have been soundly outshot by San Jose in the current series — but with Quick in top form, the numbers haven’t beaten Los Angeles.

San Jose also has revived its dominant power play, which produced both of its goals in Game 3 after the Kings shut out the Sharks in the first two games at Staples Center.

“Especially when the Conn Smythe winner (is) on the defending champion team, I’m going to assume if I was coaching against them, that I’m going to say, `Shoot lots, and get as much traffic as you can,”‘ Sutter said. “So I think San Jose has that mindset, as St. Louis did last series. You’re trying to get your team to shoot more, and you’re trying to get players to go to the net more.”

(CBS) Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews is a finalist for the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award, which is presented to the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice during the regular season.

Daniel Alfredsson of the Ottawa Senators and Dustin Brown of the Los Angeles Kings are the other finalists.

Former NHL star Mark Messier determines the winner of the award. He solicits suggestions from from club and NHL personnel and fans to come up with the finalists and then makes a final decision on the winner.

The following is the explanation of Toews’ nomination as provided by the award:

Toews was named captain of the Blackhawks in 2008 when he was just 20-years-old, making him the third-youngest captain in NHL history at the time. While his leadership on the ice is undisputed, his role off the ice with various children’s charitable causes makes him an undeniable role model to fans. In his spare time, Toews volunteers to grant wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation and visits with patients at the local children’s hospital and Chicago’s Misericordia. Last fall, he returned home to join the Winnipeg Patrolmen Hockey Club and other NHL players for the “Goals for Dreams Hockey Challenge,” which helped raise $80,000 for the Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Dream Factory, a charity that grants dreams for critically and chronically ill children.

LARRY LAGE,AP Hockey Writer

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings got much younger this year, rebuilding with rookies and prospects pushed onto the ice.

For much of the lockout-delayed season, it didn’t look good for them.

The storied franchise used to chase Stanley Cup titles with key players in their late 30s and 40s such as Nicklas Lidstrom, Chris Chelios, Steve Yzerman, Brett Hull and Larry Murphy.

Not anymore.

As the Chicago Blackhawks are now finding out, the Red Wings are much better than they were during the regular season thanks to an improved cast of inexperienced players.

“We’ve had great growth from within, I think the most since I’ve been in the National Hockey League for sure,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said Sunday. “That may be because we have a different type of team. We got a whole bunch of kids, so we have a chance for growth.”

Red Wings rookie Brendan Smith scored the winning goal Saturday in Detroit’s 4-1 win at Chicago that tied the series 1-1. The top-seeded Blackhawks won the opener by the same 4-1 score.

“We knew they were going to come back and play much better than they did in Game 1,” Chicago captain Jonathan Toews said. “Obviously, we didn’t quite match the effort.”

When the puck drops Monday night in Detroit for Game 3, Toews hopes his team is ready to bounce back.

“There’s no time to waste in this series,” Toews said. “We know going into their building it’s even more difficult.”

It will be even more challenging for Chicago if Toews can’t produce as he did in the 48-game regular season.

Toews had 23 goals, tying Patrick Kane for the team lead and trailing just four players in the league. However, he is struggling to score for a third straight postseason.

Toews is in an eight-game playoff slump that dates to last year. He has just three goals combined in three postseasons since scoring seven goals to help Chicago win the Cup in 2010. He had seven goals the previous postseason — his first — when Detroit eliminated the Blackhawks in the Western Conference finals.

Henrik Zetterberg had a lot to do with holding Toews without a point in Game 2, an accomplishment that didn’t surprise Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard.

“Most nights, he’s the best player on the ice,” Howard said. “No different from (Saturday), the way he was all over Toews the whole game, shutting him down. We’re going to need that for the whole series.”

The Red Wings would also benefit if their inexperienced players figure out a way to avoid fading into the background.

Before Smith’s go-ahead goal on Saturday, first-year player Damien Brunner and rookie Gustav Nyquist also scored winning goals this postseason — in overtime against Anaheim. Teammate Joakim Andersson ranks among rookie scoring leaders.

The 27-year-old Brunner, too old to be a candidate for the Calder Trophy given to the rookie of the year, has followed up a 26-point regular season with four goals in the playoffs to match Johan Franzen for the team lead. He also has three assists.

Calder finalist Brandon Saad has only one assist in seven postseason games for the Blackhawks. The 20-year-old forward had 27 points during the regular season.

Brunner has insisted it doesn’t bother him to be out of the running for the Calder, and sounded even more thankful on Sunday that he waited to make the jump from the Swiss League.

The 5-foot-11, 184-pound forward was banged around on the ice quite a bit and had growing pains off it, dealing with a lot of travel after his longest trip last year was a 2½-hour bus ride.

“You kind of think it’s not that big of a deal when you come over, but after a couple trips and the hours you lose, especially when you come back home, it’s tough,” Brunner said. “It’s really tough.”

While Babcock’s job behind the bench was tougher this year than it had been the past seven seasons with veteran-filled rosters, he relished the opportunity to lead the young Red Wings.

“It’s the most fun I’ve had coaching in a couple years, by far, just because we have a real enthusiastic group,” Babcock said. “At the start of the year, we weren’t a good team. We all understood that, but we buckled down and we got better. It’s been fun for us. If you would have asked me before the playoffs, I would’ve told you the same thing. Then suddenly you have a little success in the playoffs — and it’s more fun.”

If he doesn't start playing like it, though, this series is over.

BOSTON (CBS) – Following an overtime loss in Game 1, all-world netminder Henrik Lundqvist sat despondent at his locker stall in the cramped visitors’ locker room at the TD Garden. He had stopped 45 of 48 shots, but he blamed himself for losing track of Brad Marchand on the game-winning goal. He said he made a mistake, that he should have kept his pads together but that he “wouldn’t lose sleep” over the split-second mental lapse.

After Game 2, Henrik might be in for some tossing and turning after experiencing some serious déjà vu.

Early in the third period, with the Bruins leading 3-2, Patrice Bergeron won the opening faceoff and shortly afterwards carried the puck on a 2-on-2 rush up the ice. With Marchand driving to the net, Bergeron carried the puck to the corner of the rink, drawing Michael Del Zotto with him before sending a pass to the front of the crease. Marchand, able to fight through Dan Girardi, got his tape on the puck and redirected it just under Lundqvist’s right pad.

The goal made the score 4-2 in favor of the Bruins with 19:34 left in the game, so it wasn’t quite the back-breaker that Thursday’s overtime goal was. Yet the goal appeared to crush New York’s hopes of clawing back, a thought completely eliminated 12 minutes later when Milan Lucic scored to give the Bruins a 5-2 lead. The rout was on, and while Lundqvist was a bit cryptic with his postgame comments, he seemed to confirm suspicions that the Rangers were taken off their game in the third period.

“We gave it to them,” Lundqvist said after the game, before repeating himself. “We gave it to them. I thought we played great, [but] I don’t think they had to work really hard to get a couple goals there. We just made it really tough on ourselves, so we have to correct a few things and go home and turn this around. It doesn’t matter the score — it’s a loss. Overtime or 5-2, doesn’t matter.”

The bottom line is that the final score doesn’t matter, but in a series predicated on defense and goaltending, the dynamic certainly shifts now. After an imperfect but respectable performance by Lundqvist in Game 1 (45 saves on 48 shots), the safe bet was for a monster performance in Game 2. Instead, he allowed five goals, the first time he’s done that in any game since March 9, 2011, and the first time he’s done it in a postseason game since April 26, 2009. His save percentage in the series now sits at .900, his goals-against average at 3.54. His regular-season numbers? A .926 save percentage and 2.05 GAA.

Despite the outcome, the Rangers won’t panic. Head coach John Tortorella said flatly, “I’m not evaluating our goaltending. I don’t need to evaluate Henrik. We know what Henrik is.”

And, really, the five goals don’t all fall on Lundqvist’s shoulders. Dan Girardi screened the goalie on Torey Krug’s shot, which opened the game’s scoring, and Girardi later kicked a Krug shot right to Gregory Campbell in front of the net for the second Bruins’ goal. Girardi again screened Lundqvist on Johnny Boychuk’s goal, the eventual game-winner, and he failed to break up the pass from Bergeron to Marchand early in the third. The icing on the cake for Girardi came when he made a decent play to drop to the ice to break up a pass, but ended up sliding out of the way and allowing Lucic to easily score the fifth goal. If anyone had a nightmare game, it was most certainly No. 5 in white, not No. 30.

Lundqvist also looked to be suffering through some sort of pain in the third period, and he later confirmed he had some sort of shoulder injury that would require a look from the team’s medical staff.

Excuses beyond his control were there for Lundqvist, and he certainly cashed in on the opportunity to make them, but he is not supposed to be just any goalie. The reigning Vezina winner and almost-unanimous best goalie in the sport should be able to rise to the challenge of playoff hockey and come through with saves no matter the circumstance — maybe not all of them, but at least one of them. That’s what it takes to get through the postseason and win a Cup for a team dependent on defense, and the last two Conn Smythe winners are proof of that.

For the last two games in Boston, dozens of reporters, microphones and cameras crowded around Lundqvist’s locker stall, because he is the superstar, and he is the “king.” His hat with the number 30 inside a crown, which he wore after the 5-2 loss, was there to remind everyone of that.

But one more game from Lundqvist where the king plays like just another goalie, and this series is going to be a lot shorter than most everyone anticipated.

(Las Vegas, NV)– An anonymous tip led to the arrest of the two suspects in the murder of a Las Vegas teen during the attempted robbery of his iPad.

A tip giving authorities a nickname as well as the street that 21-year-old Michael Solid lived on helped bring the man to justice who is accused of killing 15-year-old Marcos Arenas.

Michael Solid, 21, and Jacob Dismont, 18, were arrested Saturday in the death of 15-year-old Marcos Arenas. They are scheduled to be in court Tuesday. They are charged with open murder, conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.

According to the police report, Dismont and Solid were outside a Terrible Herbst gas station at 6380 W. Charleston Blvd. when Marcos entered the store with his iPad.

There was some footage showing Arenas and a friend entering and leaving the store. As Arenas left the area of the store, Dismont is seen exiting the Explorer and walking in the same direction as Arenas.

Dismont got into the SUV while Arenas continued to hold on to his iPad. As the SUV drove west on Charleston Blvd., Arenas fell and was run over by the vehicle.

He died at University Medical Center.

The driver, Solid, has a criminal history that includes arrests for auto theft, petty larceny and assault.

Police were able to find the address of Dismont on Aleman Drive. At about 9:20pm Saturday Dismont arrived at the residence in the vehicle that was used in the crime. The vehicle had several stickers on its frame and a license plate which was registered for a Mistubishi.

Dismont was taken into custody and questioned at police headquarters.

A memorial fund has been opened by the Arenas family at Wells Fargo Bank.
Marcos V Arenas 1255025601 is the account information.

Las Vegas CBS KXNT- Two bats have tested positive for rabies in Clark County this year. The Southern Nevada Health District is warning that any human contact with bats should be followed up with a medical assessment.

“The unfortunate thing about rabies is that by the time symptoms start, it’s too late to be treated,” said epidemiologist Casi Hickox of SNHD. “Rabies is almost always fatal.”

Rabies is a virus that is transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, andattacks the nervous system. All mammals are suseptible to rabies. There are medications that can prevent rabies if they are administered before symptoms have occurred.

“We really recommend that if any bite with an animal occurs, or any exposure to a bat occurs, you immediately contact animal control for that assessment.

Nobody should touch even a dead bat, Hickox told KXNT. She recommends reporting the discovery to animal control.

(CBS) Everybody has something to say about Derrick Rose.

That includes Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal, who recently talked about the Bulls’ point guard on 106.7 The Fan.

“That’s hard, because I’ve never experienced that injury,” Beal said. “And I know what type of injury that is, it’s possible it’s gonna happen again. Knock on wood. But at the same time, you might have to give it a go. If you’re practicing for two months and everybody in practice is saying you’re practicing well, I figure you gotta give it a shot in a game.”

At first, it seemed like Beal caught himself and wanted to give Rose the benefit of the doubt.

“It’s his decision. I can’t really have a say so in it. If he doesn’t feel he’s mentally confident to be able to go out there and help the team, I guess I can’t really blame him for it.”

But then Beal was asked if he would lose respect for a Wizards’ teammate if they made the same decision.

“A little bit. Yeah, I would,” he said. “The type of player he is, and the mentality and competitiveness that he has, I think he would have gave it a go. I don’t know what was holding him back. I think he’s scared it’s probably going to happen again and he won’t be the same. But you’re never the same after an injury. But you just have to fight through it and do something else to be able to impact the game. I’m not sure what it is he has to do. I really can’t speak for him.”

MIAMI (AP) — A year ago in the playoffs, Indiana coach Frank Vogel raised the ire of the Miami Heat by accusing them of flopping.

Different words are resonating with the Heat again now.

Not long after the Pacers reached the Eastern Conference finals and another postseason clash with Miami, Vogel called the reigning champions “just the next team that’s in our way.”

So following the Heat practice on Sunday to start preparing for the Pacers, four-time NBA MVP LeBron James insisted that his team would be ready for the challenge of facing Indiana.

Miami beat Indiana in six games last season. The teams start the East finals Wednesday night in Miami.

Nevada Highway Patrol says 20-year-old Aldo Diaz-Mafra of Las Vegas was driving an Acura southbound on northbound on I-15.

The Acura crashed into a Yukon killing two of six occupants. They are Chitra Jain, 58, from India and Ashutosh Jain, 28, from India and current resident of Belmont, Tex.

The NHP found some prescription pills and have not ruled out that Diaz-Mafra was under the influence at the time of the crash.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Two cases of Spanish being banned at New Mexico high school games were examples of a disturbing pattern that needs to be monitored and addressed, perhaps with lawsuits, a civil rights group said Monday.

The League of United Latin American Citizens has heard of a least five cases of high school players being ordered this school year not to speak Spanish during games and matches, said Ralph Arellanes, LULAC’s state director.

“The New Mexico state constitution clearly protects Spanish and Native (American) languages so outlawing (them) in any way, we believe, is against the law and we’re not going to stand for it,” Arellanes said.

New Mexico Military Institute’s Jose Gonzales was penalized a point for speaking Spanish earlier this month after an on-court official warned him twice to speak only English during a state championship singles match.

Sally Marquez, executive director of the New Mexico Activities Association, the governing board for high school sports in the state, said the official was warned not to repeat that action, even though the official was within his right since the association was following the United States Tennis Association rule book during the finals.

In addition, an umpire accused of trying to ban New Mexico high school baseball players from speaking Spanish during a game resigned last month. The resignation came after Gadsden Independent School District officials filed a complaint with the association accusing the umpire of telling a first baseman not to speak Spanish during a game in Alamogordo.

A spokesman for the association did not immediately return an email and phone call seeking comment.

Arellanes said LULAC council members are reporting other alleged cases when high school players have been told not to speak Spanish, but parents in those cases assumed it was the norm and didn’t draw attention to the situations

“I mean, they want to remain focused on the game,” he said. “Regardless, it isn’t right. We’ll file lawsuits if we have to.”

Arellanes said umpires and officials might need to go through sensitivity training in the future.

PHOENIX (AP) — Jodi Arias’ lawyers have asked to withdraw from case and say they won’t call any witnesses in penalty phase of her trial.

The stunning declaration came Monday after the judge denied their request for a mistrial based on a key witness receiving death threats. In protest to the judge’s decision, defense lawyers Kirk Nurmi and Jennifer Willmott asked to withdraw. Their request was promptly denied.

The attorneys then said they won’t call any witnesses to testify on Arias’ behalf as jurors consider a life or death sentence, sending the court into recess as lawyers work to resolve the next step.

Arias and an ex-boyfriend had been expected to speak to jurors before the panel begins deliberating whether to sentence the 32-year-old Arias to life in prison or execution for murdering her lover in 2008.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Was it an offer they couldn’t refuse from their multimillionaire boss doing the bidding for arguably the most powerful man in the U.S. Congress?

Or did Harvey Whittemore’s employees make voluntary contributions to Sen. Harry Reid because they trusted the former developer and lobbyist they knew as a generous philanthropist who supported universities, charities and medical research?

Whittemore’s trial continues in federal court in Reno Monday on charges he broke federal campaign finance laws by funneling nearly $150,000 to Reid’s re-election campaign in 2007.

Testimony so far has focused on whether there were any strings attached to the bonuses and gifts Whittemore gave employees at his real estate company while suggesting they contribute to the Nevada Democrat.

Stanton is proposing that the money be used to add more bike lanes, launch a bike-share program and prepare a citywide bicycle plan.

The Arizona Republic (http://bit.ly/YTUUWk) reports that Stanton’s proposals are included in a proposed budget that is scheduled for an initial City Council vote on Tuesday.

(Las Vegas, NV) The President of the Clark County Education Association says Clark County School Trustees need to keep the search for a new Clark County School Superintendent local.

Ruben Murillo, Jr. tells KXNT News the community is supporting a local search for a new superintendent. He says board needs to look within Clark County Schools for someone who can think outside the box , look at the progress made, and move the district forward.

The CSEA President says the next superintendent needs to work with teachers and the bargaining units, that working together is the key to success.

Some have called for a nationwide search for a new superintendent. The vacancy created with the surprise resignation of Superintendent Dwight Jones in March.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Knicks star Carmelo Anthony won’t need surgery on his troublesome knee, and the team hopes it’ll be the same for his injured shoulder, according to the New York Daily News.

Anthony will have his left shoulder re-examined now that the Knicks have been eliminated from the playoffs, the Daily News reported.

He hurt the shoulder on April 14 and aggravated it in the first round against Boston. A banged-up Anthony insisted he was “fine” after the Celtics series.

“(I)t really just kind of popped in and out a little bit,” he said. “But I’m fine.”

New York was eliminated Saturday by the Indiana Pacers.

The Knicks are “hopeful” the injury “is not serious and that it will improve with rest and therapy and won’t require surgery,” the Daily News reported. Also according to the paper, Anthony won’t need arthroscopic surgery on his now-better right knee.

Meanwhile, J.R. Smith said he wants “to retire a Knick” when asked about his future following New York’s ouster Saturday. He’s expected to opt out of his contract this offseason.

“I don’t want to go anywhere else,” said the guard, who picked the wrong time of year to go ice-cold. “I love it. I love my teammates. I love my coaches. I was sitting in the locker room looking at my jersey after the game just knowing I don’t want to be anywhere else except for in the orange and blue. So we’ll see.”

Guard Pablo Prigioni will also have a big decision to make. The impending free agent may head back to the Spanish league next season because his wife “wants to return overseas,” the New York Post reported.

“I think it’s not the moment to talk about that now,” Prigioni said Saturday, according to the Post. “It’s painful to lose. It’s painful to start the vacation now. This is about the team. Now I stay quiet.”

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Federal Election Commission says former U.S. Sen. John Ensign has agreed to pay a $32,000 civil penalty over a payment made by his parents to his one-time mistress.

While he did not admit to any culpability, the Nevada Republican agreed to pay the fine to settle allegations that he took an illegal campaign contribution from his parents.

His parents, Michael and Sharon Ensign, in 2008 gave $96,000 to Cynthia Hampton, a campaign staffer who at the time was his mistress and the wife of his aide, Douglas Hampton.

The FEC ruled the payment was an undisclosed in-kind campaign contribution that exceeded federal limits because it was a severance rather than a gift. Ensign maintained it was a gift.

Ensign’s parents also were fined $22,000 by the FEC.

Ensign resigned in 2011 before his second term expired amid a Senate Ethics Committee investigation into his actions.

(Las Vegas, NV) – A decision on a new trial for O.J. Simpson will be made in a few weeks. District Judge Linda Bell promises a ruling as soon as possible.

During week-long testimony that ended Friday, Simpson claimed his former trial lawyer, Yale Galanter was ineffective.

Galanter says he couldn’t have “fought harder or done more” to defend his client.

The former football star is back in a Nevada prison, serving at least nine years for kidnaping and robbery at the Palace Station hotel in 2007.

Galanter testified the ex-football star knew guns were used in the 2007 robbery of sports memorabilia at Palace Station, and denied denied Simpson’s claim he would work for free on the case.

At one point, the cross-examination became so heated, Judge Linda Bell had to issue a warning.

In May of 2001, Lobato fended off an attempted rapist by slashing the attacker’s penis with a knife. Recounting the story of the incident to friends may have been her biggest mistake.

That’s because in July of the same year a man she had never met was killed in a different location in west Las Vegas and his penis was cut off. The police heard about Lobato’s story and questioned her and took her story as a confession of the July crime.

She admitted that in self-defense, she had used a knife the area of the attacker’s penis in the May case.

Witnesses say Lobato was 170 miles away from the crime in Panaca, NV at the time of the homicide.

Lobato, now 30, has been sentenced to 35 years to a women’s facility in Las Vegas. The Innocence Project continues its efforts to get her case overturned and has gathered over 191,000 signatures to try and persuade Steve Wolfson to allow DNA testing on the evidence.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The latest high-stakes court hearing for O.J. Simpson in the glitzy capital of big gambles has come to a close with the former football star’s defense team feeling confident that their client is closer to getting out of prison.

The last time Simpson was in a Las Vegas courtroom, he was convicted of kidnapping and armed robbery. Now, with a new team of attorneys on his side, he has mounted a cool, methodical case that his former lead lawyer botched the 2008 trial so badly that a new one should be granted.

“He has a very good chance now,” said Ozzie Fumo, one of the attorneys who represented Simpson. “I don’t think the state was able to counter any of our issues.”

Simpson’s lawyers presented evidence that showed Miami-based attorney Yale Galanter shared responsibility for the ill-conceived plan for the NFL Hall of Famer and former Hollywood star to take back personal items and mementos from two sports collectible dealers in a Vegas hotel room. They also built a case that he deliberately sabotaged Simpson’s chances for acquittal and appeal to protect himself and his own self-interests.

When the weeklong hearing ended Friday there seemed to be little doubt that major mistakes were made when Simpson was sentenced to nine to 33 years in prison on 12 criminal counts. The real question is whether enough was done to meet the high standard needed for District Court Judge Linda Marie Bell to free Simpson from state prison and grant him a new trial.

The final witness she heard from was Galanter, who defended his actions in a tense courtroom standoff with Simpson and his new representatives Friday.

As Simpson’s legal team worked to portray Galanter as hungry for the money and fame that could come from an O.J. trial, the lawyer said it was Simpson who agreed to spend more than a half a million dollars on his defense, turned down a plea bargain and decided not to testify.

“I felt a genuine fondness for O.J. and was devastated when he lost,” Galanter said.

However, when Simpson testified Wednesday, he recounted his hotel room confrontation with memorabilia dealers, and his interactions with the lawyer he blamed for his conviction.

He said he trusted Galanter based a long professional relationship. “He was my guy,” Simpson said.

He said Galanter made no mention of a plea deal and advised him not to testify in his own defense when other lawyers said it would help.

Galanter, when he was on the stand, said Simpson brought “too much baggage” to testify given his 1995 acquittal in the murders of his wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. Following the “trial of the century” Simpson was ordered to pay $33.5 million when he was found liable for the killings in civil court.

Galanter also testified that Simpson confided to him that he had asked two men to bring guns to the hotel room in September 2007, and Simpson “knew he screwed up.”

Simpson lawyer Fumo, however, said that claim wasn’t credible.

“Galanter tried to throw O.J. under the bus, but it was inconsistent with the entire defense he presented,” Fumo said. At trial Galanter had said Simpson never ordered guns to be carried and didn’t see firearms in the room.

Simpson’s lawyers have a high legal burden to prove their case under a writ of habeas corpus, which relies on showing not only that his lawyer’s work was ineffective but that if he had acted differently it would have changed the outcome.

But there is another key issue — conflict of interest.

“An actual conflict is a violation of the right to counsel,” said Jennifer Carr, a criminal law professor at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.”

If Simpson “can succeed in showing that there has been an actual conflict, he need not show that that conflict caused the verdict. Merely showing the conflict is sufficient to show his right to counsel was violated,” Carr said.

Simpson’s testimony was pivotal on this point. Even with his hair gray and thinning, and his finely chiseled features lost under the burden of years and weight, the 65-year-old Simpson was an impressive witness.

He was still O.J. Simpson, a man used to the spotlight. He shuffled to the witness stand in shackles but spoke with confidence. He told of dining with Galanter the night before the hotel caper and telling him the plan.

“I talked to Yale about it two or three times,” Simpson said. “The overall advice he was giving was, ‘You have a right to get your stuff.’”

Galanter told a different story.

“He said he and some of his boys might be doing a sting in the morning,” said Galanter.

He added that Simpson said, “he finally had a lead on some personal pictures and memorabilia that was stolen from him years earlier. I said, ‘O.J., you’ve got to call the police.’”

As it turned out, someone called the police but it wasn’t Simpson. The memorabilia dealers claimed they were robbed at gunpoint. Simpson was arrested.

“It obviously didn’t go the way I hoped it would,” Simpson said with a touch of irony.

Las Vegas lawyers Gabriel Grasso and Malcolm LaVergne, who also participated in the case, testified that Galanter had a conflict because he could have been called as a witness. There was a trail of phone calls between Simpson and Galanter before and after the Sept. 13, 2007 confrontation.

Other points raised by Simpson’s team included Galanter’s failure to hire investigators or experts and never interviewing witnesses against Simpson because, “We already knew a lot about them.”

A key criticism was Galanter’s refusal to hire experts to analyze audio recordings from the hotel incident, telling a colleague they were “operating on a shoestring” while demanding more money from Simpson’s business manager. He also refused to challenge admissibility of the tapes, insisting they would help Simpson.

Jurors said they convicted Simpson solely on the basis of the tapes because they found the witnesses not credible.

When the hearing ended, the judge said would issue a written ruling but did not set a date.

If Simpson succeeds in getting his conviction thrown out, prosecutors will have to either retry him or offer a plea bargain. It is also possible Simpson could be freed with credit for time served. If he loses, he will be sent back to prison and will probably appeal to a higher court.

He will be 70 before he is eligible for parole.

( Las Vegas, NV ) Two men have been arrested in the killing of a teenage boy over an iPad in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas Metro Police announced Sunday that 18-year-old Jacob Dismont (left side of photo) and 21-year-old Michael Solid (right side of photo) were booked into the Clark County jail on charges on open murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.

According to investigators, 15-year-old Marcos Arenas was walking down a street with the iPad on Thursday when a vehicle stopped and one of the suspects got out and tried to steal the device from him.

Dismont is accused of trying to wrest the tablet away from Arenas and dragging him toward the SUV when the youth wouldn’t let go of the iPad. After Dismont re-entered the vehicle and Solid drove away, the teen was dragged until he fell. The vehicle ran over Marcos and he died.

VISTA, Calif. (AP) — The lawyer for a California heavy metal singer accused of trying to hire someone to kill his estranged wife says the singer’s mind has been ravaged by steroid use.

U-T San Diego reports that the detail came to light during a Friday hearing for 32-year-old Timothy Lambesis, who has pleaded not guilty to solicitation for murder. A judge at the hearing reduced Lambesis’ bail from $3 million to $2 million.

Prosecutors say Lambesis, frontman for Grammy-winning band “As I Lay Dying,” paid $1,000 cash to an undercover detective posing as a hitman and gave instructions on how best to kill his wife.

Lambesis’ attorney Thomas Warwick said in court that his client had gotten into body building and steroid use. He said Lambesis’ thoughts were “devastatingly affected” by the drugs.

Simpson’s former lawyer defended himself point-by-point Friday against allegations he botched the former football star’s armed-robbery trial, after giving damaging testimony that Simpson actually knew his buddies had guns when they went to a hotel room together to reclaim some sports memorabilia.

Miami-based attorney Yale Galanter quickly found himself under withering cross-examination from a Simpson lawyer intent on proving that Galanter’s word couldn’t be trusted — that he knew ahead of time of Simpson’s plan and spent more effort covering up his involvement than representing Simpson.

The weeklong hearing concluded late Friday with Clark County District Judge Linda Marie Bell telling attorneys she will issue her decision in writing. She didn’t specify a date.

Simpson was returned to prison custody. His attorneys, Patricia Palm and Ozzie Fumo, said they were optimistic that the judge would grant a new trial.

“I just think the evidence of his claims is overwhelming,” Palm said.

Galanter took the stand as the state’s star witness in a hearing on Simpson’s claim that he was so badly represented at trial and on appeal that his conviction should be thrown out.

He spent most of the day on the defensive, with Simpson lawyer Tom Pitaro grilling him with accusations and pointed questions.

“Mr. Simpson never told me he was going to go to the Palace (Station) hotel with a bunch of thugs, kidnap people and take property by force,” Galanter said at one point. “To insinuate I, as his lawyer, would have blessed it is insane.”

Galanter conceded at one point that Simpson’s conviction was his responsibility.

At another point, he conceded that he “misspoke” when he told the trial judge, Jackie Glass, that crucial audio recordings had been carefully analyzed by experts.

“Clearly I misspoke,” Galanter said as Pitaro bored in. “I would never, ever … I would just never intentionally mislead a judicial officer or a lawyer. I’m falling on that sword.”

Galanter denied giving Simpson the go-ahead to retrieve the photos and footballs he believed had been stolen from him. He denied keeping Simpson in the dark about offers of plea deals that carried only a few years in prison. He said his client agreed all along with the decision not to put him on the stand to testify at his trial.

And he disputed Simpson’s testimony from earlier this week when the former NFL star said he didn’t know anyone in the hotel room had guns.

“When you look at the entire trial, I don’t think I could have fought harder, done more,” Galanter said. “I put every ounce of blood, sweat and soul into it.”

At another point, he said: “Simpson brought a lot of baggage into the courtroom. It’s not like the 12 jurors didn’t know he was accused of murder and acquitted.”

Simpson, 65, was found guilty in 2008 of kidnapping and armed robbery over the hotel room episode and was sentenced to nine to 33 years in prison. The conviction came 13 years to the day after his “trial of the century” acquittal in Los Angeles in the murders of his ex-wife and a friend of hers.

Galanter testified that Simpson confided to him that he had asked two men to bring guns to the hotel room in September 2007, and “he knew he screwed up.”

On the stand, Galanter brought up the guns only after he paused and was reminded that Simpson had waived attorney-client privilege. “I’m very uncomfortable doing this,” he said.

Testifying about events leading up to the incident, Galanter said he was surprised when Simpson told him over dinner in Las Vegas that he and several other men were planning a “sting” the next morning to take back the mementos.

Galanter said he advised Simpson not to take matters into his own hands: “I said, ‘O.J., you’ve got to call the police.’”

Simpson testified that Galanter advised him that he was within his rights to retrieve the items, told him not to testify at the trial, and failed to tell him prosecutors had offered plea bargains.

During questioning about how much Galanter was paid for the case, the judge asked Pitaro where he was going with his questions.

“What Mr. Galanter has done is, this man has received over a half-million dollars and has put his interest, his financial interest, above the interest of his client,” Pitaro said.

Galanter insisted he told Simpson at least three times that prosecutors discussed plea bargains. He said Simpson rejected them.

Simpson said, “No deal. No way,” to an offer from the district attorney of five to seven years in prison, Galanter said. Later, during the trial, Simpson turned down a better offer, Galanter said.

“I went out in the hall and said to O.J., ‘There is an offer of two to five.’ He said, ‘See if they will take a year,’” Galanter testified. “I discussed a year with them, and they said no and the trial went on.”

If Simpson succeeds in getting his conviction thrown out, prosecutors will have to decide whether to retry him or offer a plea bargain. If he loses, he will be sent back to prison and will probably appeal. He will be 70 before he is eligible for parole.
