LAS VEGAS (KXNT) – A father faces murder charges after police said he shot and killed his adult son inside a Las Vegas apartment late Tuesday, authorities said.

Patrol officers working on an unrelated incident inside the apartment complex on the 7800 block of South Rainbow Boulevard said they heard gunfire from another building in the complex around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday, a Las Vegas Metro Police statement reported.

Moments later, officers were approached by Michael Gardenhire, who said someone had been shot in a nearby apartment. Inside, police found another man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not immediately released.

LVMPD Homicide detectives determined the victim was Gardenhire’s adult son and Gardenhire, 49, was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on one count of murder. Investigators did not discuss what may have led to the shooting.

The killing was the 155th homicide investigated by the LVMPD in 2016.
