LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 35-year-old woman who is accused of shooting her boyfriend to death in a car in Las Vegas told police he was physically abusive in recent months and threatened to kill her before she pulled the trigger.
A police report says Cheryl Rheamount also told homicide investigators that she reached for a gun instead of getting out of the car because she feared Matthew Antonio Bernardi would chase her.
The coroner says the 32-year-old Bernardi, of Reno, died Sunday evening of a gunshot to the chest.
Rheamount was arrested at an apartment complex, and police say they recovered a gun believed to have been used in the shooting.
Rheamount is being held at the Clark County jail pending an initial court appearance on a felony murder charge. She’s expected to have an attorney appointed to her case.
