MCHENRY, Ill. (AP) — A suburban Chicago judge has sentenced a man to 49 years in prison for fatally shooting his former girlfriend and then entombing her body in his home.
The Arlington Heights Daily Herald reports 65-year-old William J. Ross of McHenry was sentenced Wednesday in the death of 49-year-old Jacqueline Schaefer. Jurors convicted him this summer of first-degree murder. Ross was arrested in Las Vegas and returned to Illinois for trial.
Authorities have said Schaefer’s remains were found in a bedroom in Ross’ home that was sealed with caulk, molding and paint.
Judge Sharon Prather called the crime “horrible, diabolical and unforgivable.” Ross briefly spoke to the judge, maintaining his innocence and saying he’s “not a coldblooded killer.” He said he’s “a good person with some rough edges.”
