LAS VEGAS (KXNT/AP) – A man wanted by Las Vegas police in connection with a shooting last week died Thursday after he was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer while attempting to escape officers by crossing U.S. 95, according to police.
The crash happened on 95 near Flamingo Road around 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
Officer Larry Hadfield said detectives investigating a Sept. 22 shooting wanted to talk to the man, but he failed to stop for a marked patrol car and then got out of his vehicle and ran on to the freeway.
The freeway was closed in both directions southeast of downtown Las Vegas following the crash. By 3 p.m., just one southbound lane of 95 was squeezing past the crash scene near Flamingo Road amid severe backups. Northbound freeway traffic was detoured onto Flamingo for a 4-mile detour to Boulder Highway and back to the freeway.
The Sept. 22 shooting left a man wounded in a parking area of a mobile home park on Boulder Highway, about 2 miles from where Thursday’s chase occurred.
